SANBI is seeking to appoint a motivated individual with proven database administration and ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) experience on a permanent basis as a Biodiversity Data Management Specialist .

Description

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) requires a motivated individual with proven database administration and ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) experience, to perform analysis and remediation of data from SANBI and its data partners, through the application of standards and practises that support the collection, structure/format, coding, review, entry, validation, editing, and reporting of biodiversity data.

Requirements

The successful candidate requires a degree in Natural Science, with at least some modules or courses in Computer Science or data management, enhanced by at least 3 years’ working experience in biodiversity data compilation, data quality control and cleaning, data management and analysis. The candidate must demonstrate familiarity with the standards and protocols developed by the Biodiversity Information Standards (TDWG). 

Familiarity with SANS and other applicable data management standards will be an added advantage. The candidate must demonstrate exceptional proficiency in MS Excel, MS Access and database applications (e.g. MSSQL, MySQL). The candidate must be in possession of a valid (unendorsed) Code B drivers’ license with one year’s practical driving experience.

Key responsibilities

The appointee will be responsible for:

  • Reviewing, analysing, validating and remediating biodiversity data and metadata to ensure consistency, integrity and accuracy;
  • Providing support to data partners and creating procedures to identify and mitigate potential data problems;
  • Performing Export, Transform and Load processes across all relevant systems; 
  • Reviewing and enhancing data management procedures in line with technological innovations and new standards;
  • Providing data management training.

In addition to the aforementioned requirements, the successful candidate must demonstrate a good spoken and written command of English, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

SANBI offers an annual salary of R334 545.00 and additional fringe benefits.
