The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) requires an efficient and enthusiastic person with an interest in biodiversity data to support the Foundational Biodiversity Information Programme through providing data management and data analysis of species data submitted to the FBIP by grant holders, in order to assist with the achievement of the Programme and SANBI’s strategic goals.


The position requires the candidate to have at least a BSc Honours Degree in Biological  Sciences enhanced by a minimum of 3 years’ of experience in compilation, management, analysis and remediation of biodiversity data (this may include work done as part of postgraduate studies). The incumbent must demonstrate exceptional proficiency in MS Excel and Access. Database administration experience (e.g. MySQL, MSSQL) would be an advantage. The incumbent must demonstrate a high level of attention to detail and ability to stay organised when dealing with large amounts of data.

Key responsibilities

The appointee will be responsible for:


  • Review, analyse, validate and remediate species data and metadata submitted by grant holders to ensure consistency, integrity and accuracy.
  • Provide support to data partners/grant holders and create procedures to identify potential data problems.
  • Manage the import and export of data from and to appropriate platforms.
  • Establish and maintain a system for tracking and managing data sets submitted by grant holders.



SANBI offers an all inclusive annual salary of R458 326.65
